What Is the Difference Between a Bunker and a Shelter?

The terms bunker and shelter are often used interchangeably, but they usually refer to different levels of structural protection.

A shelter typically refers to a reinforced safe room or protected space designed for short-term refuge during emergencies such as explosions, earthquakes or civil unrest.

A bunker generally refers to a fully engineered underground structure with thicker reinforced concrete, controlled air systems and extended autonomy capabilities.

Bunkers are usually designed to provide protection against:

• blast overpressure

• structural shockwaves

• chemical or biological contaminants

• radiological fallout from distant detonations

Shelters may provide a lower level of protection but are often easier to integrate within existing buildings.

CBSS designs both bunker systems and reinforced shelters depending on the client’s protection requirements and the structural conditions of the property.
